Breaking Barriers: Natalie Nakase and the Rise of the Golden State Valkyries

Video By KPIX | CBS News Bay Area

Natalie Nakase is making history as the first head coach of the Golden State Valkyries—and the first Asian-American to lead a WNBA team. A veteran with over 16 years of coaching experience, she’s held roles with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, where she helped win back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Her appointment in October 2024 marked the beginning of a bold new era for the Bay Area’s first WNBA expansion team since 2008.

A former UCLA walk-on turned starter, Nakase also broke ground as the first Asian-American player in the National Women’s Basketball League. Her Japanese-American heritage and personal journey have shaped a leadership style defined by grit, humility, and inclusivity. She’s not just coaching a team—she’s embodying a path forward for underrepresented voices in the game.

In the Valkyries’ debut season, Nakase’s impact is already visible. With a strong defensive identity and disciplined play, they’re not only winning games, they’re setting a new standard for what an expansion franchise can achieve. For many, Nakase’s success is bigger than basketball: it’s a breakthrough moment for Asian-American representation and a powerful reminder of what’s possible with vision and leadership.
