Video by Indiatimes. Catastrophic Floods Killed Hundreds in Pakistan | Mass Burials as Death Toll Soars.
From Pakistan’s mountains to the streets of Hong Kong and Seoul, Asia has been hammered by a chain of extreme weather events since May to mid August. Monsoon floods, flash storms, and typhoons have killed hundreds, displaced millions, and exposed fragile infrastructure across the region.
🇵🇰 Pakistan: Deadly Monsoon Floods
On August 15, more than 337 people, including at least 207 in Buner District, have been killed after a rare cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Roads in the tourism-reliant north remain washed out, stranding visitors and cutting off mountain communities. Adding to the death toll this monsoon season, more than 600 people nationwide have now lost their lives since late June, a toll that includes 140 children.

In Uttarakhand, a catastrophic flash flood struck Dharali village on August 5, likely triggered by a cloudburst or glacial lake burst. At least five died, with dozens missing. Neighboring Himachal Pradesh has suffered over 110 deaths from weeks of flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts in Mandi and Kullu.
🇨🇳 China and Hong Kong: Record-Breaking Rain
Video by MIRROR NOW. China Floods Update: 80+ Dead, 80,000 Evacuated As Massive Landslides, Storms Ravage Beijing.
China’s 2025 monsoon season has become its deadliest in years, with Beijing worst hit—44 killed, including 31 elderly in a Miyun care home, and 80,000 evacuated. Nationwide, floods, storms, and landslides have killed over 100, displaced 100,000, and left dozens missing. Tropical Storm Podul forced 15,000 evacuations in Fujian, Typhoon Wipha killed two and left 10 missing in Shandong, while flash floods in Gansu and Inner Mongolia claimed 20 lives.

Hong Kong was deluged by its heaviest August rain since 1884, logging over 350 mm in a day and prompting a record five “black rainstorm” warnings in just over a week. Flooded streets, subways, and hospitals forced school closures, flight delays, and citywide disruption, underscoring rising climate-driven risks.
🇰🇷 South Korea: Capital Region Flooding
Since August 13, 270–320 mm of rain has drenched Seoul, Incheon, Paju, and Gimpo, killing one and triggering “serious” landslide alerts. Rescuers evacuated over 800 people, saved 145 from flood zones, and restored power to 4,000 homes.

🇹🇼 Taiwan: Typhoon Podul and Torrential Rains
Typhoon Podul swept southern Taiwan on August 13, closing schools and offices, injuring 33, and leaving one missing. About 8,000 were evacuated before power was restored. The storm weakened in China, prompting 15,000 coastal evacuations without major damage.
🇯🇵 Japan: Out-of-Season Downpours
Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu saw over 400 mm of rain in 24 hours, flooding streets and homes under a meter of water. Six died, five remain missing, and millions evacuated as landslides, road collapses, and power outages crippled infrastructure.

💔 Human Cost Mounts
Save the Children reports more than 130 child deaths in recent weeks. Thousands of schools are damaged or destroyed. “We’re seeing not just more rain, but rain falling faster and harder than ever before,” said a climate analyst. “Cities and villages alike are struggling to cope.” As August continues, forecasters warn that more storms are likely—leaving millions bracing for further devastation.
🌡️ Shared Climate Drivers
Experts say these disasters are fueled by common forces: a warmer atmosphere intensifying monsoons, warmer seas powering stronger typhoons, and altered jet streams stalling storms over Japan and Korea. Rapid urbanization worsens flooding by overwhelming drainage systems.
