Donald Trump’s preferred approach to dealing with most countries in the world is “coercive diplomacy”: he threatens consequences if others don’t comply with his demands. However, Mexico has been an exception to this rule, with its President, Claudia Sheinbaum, using what she calls “a cool head” and continuing to engage with Trump and his administration at various levels in negotiations.
Sheinbaum’s style of diplomacy, a “third way” that is neither confrontation nor capitulation, has earned her some delays and exceptions in tariffs imposed by the US, and even praise from Trump, who is often ready to insult other world leaders and has called her a “marvelous woman.”
A panel of experts will discuss why and how the Mexican President has kept the lines open with Trump and what is at stake for both countries.
