The BA.2 Variant Gains Ground: Are We Heading Back to the Future?

The BA.2 variant is gaining ground, accounting for more than 50 percent of new infections in New York and New England, and almost 35 percent in California and elsewhere. This week’s roundtable news briefing will focus on:

  • How virulent is BA.2 compared to Omicron and Delta?
  • Which populations are most at risk for infection, hospitalization, and death?
  • Should we return to mask mandates?
  • Will the call for a second booster for those over 50 mitigate some of the impact of the BA.2 variant?
  • What about children, especially those under 5 who are not yet eligible for vaccinations?
