🇺🇸 U.S. Escalates the Conflict 💥
The United States has now directly entered the conflict alongside Israel, launching airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. As journalist Ben Norton has argued, this moment did not arrive suddenly. Washington was already deeply involved well before these strikes, providing diplomatic, military, and political backing as Israel initiated its latest offensive. The airstrikes formalized a role the U.S. had already assumed behind the scenes.
Donald Trump authorized direct U.S. military action after publicly supporting Israel’s initial bombings, transforming what had been a regional confrontation into a far broader and more dangerous escalation. Iran has since warned that it will retaliate against U.S. targets. With more than 40,000 American troops stationed across West Asia and dozens of U.S. bases within range of Iranian forces and allied groups, the risk of a wider regional confrontation is substantial.
☢️ Not Just About Nukes
Despite official messaging, this escalation is not solely about Iran’s nuclear program. U.S. intelligence agencies had previously assessed that Iran was not actively pursuing a nuclear weapon. However, large scale military pressure and direct attacks on nuclear infrastructure may create the very conditions that push Tehran to reconsider that position. Rather than preventing proliferation, the use of force may accelerate it.
🎯 Imperial Goals in the Region
According to Norton’s analysis, the underlying motivations extend far beyond immediate security concerns. He argues that the attacks reflect a long standing strategic agenda shared by Washington and Tel Aviv. Core objectives include maintaining U.S. dominance in West Asia, weakening the Axis of Resistance made up of Iran and its allied movements, and destabilizing Iran’s political system in hopes of eventual regime change.
Other aims include permanently blocking Iran from developing nuclear capabilities under any circumstances and advancing the total colonization of Palestinian territory by removing regional opposition.
🌍 A Global Strategy for Power
On a global level, the confrontation with Iran fits into a broader effort to preserve U.S. financial and geopolitical primacy. This includes protecting the petrodollar system, slowing the shift away from the U.S. dollar in international trade, and weakening alliances such as BRICS that challenge Western economic dominance.
Washington also seeks to fracture cooperation among Iran, Russia, and China, while laying the groundwork for isolating Beijing as the primary long term rival.
🧭 A Campaign for Global Hegemony
Taken together, the escalation against Iran is not simply a regional crisis. It is part of a wider strategy to sustain U.S. hegemony at a time when global power is becoming increasingly multipolar. The consequences of this approach, both for the region and the world, remain deeply uncertain.
