He is the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate.

A longtime public servant, Alex Padilla was appointed in 2021 to fill the seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris and elected to a full term in 2022. He is the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate and the son of Mexican immigrants. Padilla recently made headlines after DHS officers in Los Angeles threw him to the ground despite his identifying as a Senator—highlighting urgent concerns around immigration enforcement.
