Overview
The Trump Administration has revived public charge, dramatically expanding its scope. The public charge rule denies green cards to applicants who use or will use public benefits like Medicaid, housing assistance or food stamps.
The rule, set to roll out September 18, gives broad authority to immigration officials to determine whether an applicant might become a public charge. Even before its implementation, the rule has already created a chilling effect: many immigrant families have dropped out of critical safety net programs for food and medical care, for fear of invoking the public charge rule.
