Steph Curry’s Return to China: Honored Like a Prince, Welcomed Like Family

In mid-August 2025, Stephen Curry returned to Chongqing for the Asia leg of his Curry Brand World Tour with Under Armour, his first visit to the city in a decade. What could have been a routine promotional stop quickly became something far bigger: a cultural celebration, a moment of people-to-people diplomacy, and a reception that honored him like royalty while welcoming him like family.

🌌 The Mountain Mega City Went All Out

Chongqing did not simply welcome Curry. It transformed itself for him. Subway cars were wrapped in his name and image. Buildings lit up the skyline. Billboards across the city flashed messages reading “Welcome to China, Curry.” Trucks packed with sneakers and memorabilia rolled through the streets like mobile Curry museums.

Even Curry seemed stunned by the scale of it all, laughing as he said, “This is crazier than a championship parade.” Fans sprinted through malls and narrow alleyways just to catch a glimpse of him, shouting “MVP” at the top of their lungs.

Then came the defining moment. More than 5,000 drones filled the night sky, replaying Curry’s three-pointers and his signature “night-night” celebration. Sichuan opera masks and city landmarks were woven into the display. It was surreal, like watching a career animated across the skyline.

🏀 Curry Camp: Sweat, Threes, and a Dunk

Curry also hosted his first Curry Camp outside the United States. The heat was intense, pushing past 40 degrees Celsius, but he powered through drills, buried deep threes, and kept going until he finally threw down a dunk. The crowd erupted. He later handed out 400 signed pairs of his shoes, a gesture that sent fans into another frenzy.

A widely shared video of Curry’s shooting drills showed nearly every fan in the arena holding up a phone, chanting “MVP” in unison. The energy was impossible to miss.

🎉 Fan Devotion and Curry Con

At Curry Con, the first convention dedicated entirely to him, fans lined up for sneakers, games, and interactive experiences. But the most moving moment came from a single fan who drove 3,000 kilometers from Beijing in a Curry-themed car, collecting messages from supporters along the way. Curry sat inside the car and watched the entire journey play out on video, visibly moved by the effort and love behind it.

There was also a life-sized wax statue that had him joking, “Is this my twin?” and a traditional face-changing opera performance that clearly impressed him. When asked about his favorite Chinese food, Curry went with hot pot and everything that goes into it.

🤝 Bigger Than Basketball

Curry’s reception felt like something usually reserved for heads of state. Who gets this type of love? It was extraordinary. For a few days, trade wars and political tensions faded into the background. What remained was basketball, culture, and connection. The visit offered a simple reminder that sometimes the strongest diplomacy happens when people come together around shared passions and genuine curiosity.
