Overview

In California, many educators are reporting overcrowded classrooms, staffing shortages, and a lack of resources to support the students in their care. On November 3rd, Californians will vote on whether to make permanent a tax on high-income people that now brings in between $5 billion and $15 billion each year for the state’s schools and its healthcare system. The tax is now set to expire in 2031.

Proposition 3 asks voters whether the state should extend an existing tax on the wealthiest 2% residents to fund needed services — without raising or adding new taxes. Supporters argue these funds are necessary to prevent future budget cuts to needed services. Opponents argue that raising taxes on wealthy residents could harm them and drive many to leave the state.

Join American Community Media and the California Teachers Association for a briefing on Proposition 3, the classroom conditions that led to its consideration, and how it may affect students, families, and school districts across the communities our journalists cover.
