Physicist Thomas W. Campbell, author of the My Big TOE (Theory of Everything) trilogy, is best known not for his long career in defense and aerospace, but for a sweeping vision of reality: that our universe is not fundamental matter but a kind of virtual reality created for the evolution of consciousness.
👶 A Paradigm of Stagnation
Campbell says that for most of human history, our spiritual growth was flat. For nearly 200,000 years, people lived much the same way, struggling for survival with little collective progress. He calls this stage “daycare for budding consciousness.”
The purpose of life, in his view, is to practice making choices between love and fear. Only in the past thousand years, and especially the last 500 years, did progress accelerate. Societies began to recognize rights, build republics, and slowly value life more broadly. This history reveals a long paradigm of inertia now giving way to something new.
🌀 The Paradigm Shift at the Curve ⤴
Campbell describes humanity as standing at the “knee of the curve,” the point where gradual progress begins to rise sharply. Growth accelerates as learning compounds, and he believes we are entering a phase of rapid transformation. But to keep advancing, humanity needs a major paradigm shift. The old ethic of materialism built on power and control no longer serves us. To move forward, Campbell says, we must build a new ethic based on cooperation, sharing, and compassion.
📡 Technology as a Paradigm Breaker
One reason Campbell is hopeful is technology. In Buddha’s time, a teacher might reach only a few dozen people. Today, a single message can reach billions in hours. The internet, he believes, is a tool that allows love-based ideas to spread across the planet. For the first time, humanity has the ability to evolve in big leaps instead of small steps.
⚛️ A Consciousness-Based Physics
Campbell’s boldest idea is that consciousness comes first and the physical world is like a simulation. He says a Larger Consciousness System (LCS) runs reality, while each of us is an Individuated Unit of Consciousness (IUOC)—like players in a multiplayer game.
In this “game,” the universe only renders detail when needed, just like a video game loads scenery only when you look at it. This, he argues, explains quantum puzzles such as why particles act differently when observed.
To support this idea, Campbell has proposed experiments to test whether reality shows signs of being “rendered.” If proven, he believes this could help science see consciousness, not matter, as the true foundation of reality.
🌒 The Rough Road to Renewal
Campbell admits the next few decades will be turbulent. Rapid change brings confusion and conflict. He predicts a “last gasp” from those attached to power and control who will fight to maintain the old order. Yet he says only a small percentage of people need to change for the world to shift. If just ten percent of humanity lives with love and authenticity, others will follow by example.
He already sees signs that this shift is starting. More people are questioning materialism, exploring consciousness, and seeking authenticity in their daily lives. Young generations, he says, are more open to cooperation and inner growth. For Campbell, these are early signs that evolution is guiding us toward a more caring and conscious society.
🔑 Paradigm Keepers and Makers
Campbell believes the “high priests” of modern culture are scientists. Most people do not test reality for themselves; they trust science to tell them what is true. If scientists begin to view consciousness as central, he thinks the rest of society will quickly follow.
That, he says, could transform our culture within decades. Instead of a world driven by competition and fear, we could see one based on compassion, equity, and cooperation. Despite today’s turmoil, Campbell keeps a positive outlook. He believes evolution is moving humanity toward love, and that the curve of change is already bending upward.
