Foggy, underrated, and full of flavor, the Sunset District is where San Francisco keeps some of its best bites. In this food crawl, chonkyABG hit five neighborhood favorites, mixing old-school gems with personal comfort food staples. Here’s how she did it:
🍜 Thai Nghiep Ky Mi Gia
First stop, a hidden Vietnamese gem known for its braised duck noodle soup. The tender duck is marinated with dried tangerine peel. Add springy noodles, rich broth, and a fried fishcake and you’ve basically got soup-level nirvana. Just iconic San Francisco. | 1427 Noriega St, San Francisco, CA 94122 | Yelp Pics |
🍗 San Tung
A true Sunset legend and home of San Francisco’s most famous wings, San Tung draws crowds for good reason. These dry-fried beauties are double-fried, then glazed in a sticky, garlicky, sweet-spicy sauce that clings in all the right ways. As a result, the crunch is intense, the flavor is addictive, and yes, the hype is absolutely deserved. People wait in long lines for a taste. While San Tung also offers a full menu of Northern Chinese classics, the wings remain the main reason people return. | 1031 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122 | Yelp Pics |
🍞 Pineapple King Bakery
Just past 19th Avenue, chonkyABG hits a beloved Hong Kong-style bakery in the Outer Sunset. The star? Warm pineapple buns fresh from the oven, each one stuffed with a thick slab of butter. The contrast of soft bread and salty richness is peak comfort. Their lemon iced tea is tart, velvety, and sugar-free. It’s officially on my list next time I’m in the neighborhood. | 1915 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122 | Yelp Pics |
🌮 Hook Fish Co
Out in the deep Outer Sunset, by the beach, Hook Fish serves flaky, perfectly fried fish tacos with crunchy slaw and spicy aioli. Pro tip: eat fast before the tiny tortilla gives up. | 4542 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122 | Yelp Pics |
🦀 Thanh Long
Since 1971, this Outer Sunset classic has served one of San Francisco’s most iconic crab and noodle pairings. Thanh Long popularized San Francisco’s garlic noodles, crafting them in a secret kitchen and coating each strand in buttery garlic sauce. Servers crack open whole roasted Dungeness crab at the table and soak it in even more garlic butter — messy, rich, and unforgettable. Over the decades, Thanh Long helped shape Vietnamese American comfort food in the Bay Area, and to this day, it continues to draw loyal locals and curious visitors alike. | 4101 Judah St, San Francisco, CA 94122 | Yelp Pics |
