Some 2,000 National Guard members arrived in Los Angeles and were present in the city center early June 8 morning after two days of unrest following raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The National Guard was deployed by express order of President Donald Trump June 7 night following a raid in the city of Paramount, Los Angeles County, which sparked a series of protests against federal law enforcement. Trump bypassed California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has condemned the action.
In a social media post, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said shortly after midnight that National Guard troops had not been deployed to the city. However, around 4 am, military personnel began arriving at the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles to ensure the protection of federal agents. National Guard troops were also deployed to the Palace of Justice, next to City Hall.
Protests began in the Los Angeles area June 6 after federal immigration agents raided downtown and the Westlake neighborhood, arresting more than 40 people, including the president of the SEIU labor union.
The protests continued after the presence of ICE agents was reported in the city of Paramount, with a large number of people gathering. There were also protests in the Compton area, where groups of protesters set a vehicle on fire.
