State and local officials gathered Oct. 1 for a wellness event in rural Siskiyou County, in northern California, where they shared information and resources on ways to stay safe amid record heat.
The event, organized by Siskiyou County Public Health and the California Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications, brought together more than 40 local and state agencies offering information on everything from MediCal access to services for the region’s sizable farmworker community.
Catherine Sievers is with the Siskiyou County Resource Collaborative (SCRC), an umbrella organization that provides comprehensive and integrated services to residents and communities in the area. She was among a number of community outreach personnel on hand at the event to share information about SCRC’s Heat Exhaustion Awareness and Preparedness campaign.
“Siskiyou is such a remote county,” says Sievers, noting that information can be hard to find, especially for older residents. “A lot of our information is spread through social media, and our seniors don’t access social media, so it’s really hard to spread awareness through that community.”
