Video by The Breakfast Club. Zohran Mamdani laid out a bold, people-first agenda for NYC, declaring, “People just want dignity and they want to feel safe.”
🎤 Mixtapes, Buses & the Ballot Box
Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born, Astoria-based New York State Assembly member and democratic socialist, joined The Breakfast Club (video above) to discuss his journey from aspiring rapper to progressive politician. Selling mixtapes on buses taught him how to tell stories, face rejection, and engage strangers, skills he says now fuel his political organizing.
🏙️ Core Platform: Make NYC Affordable
Mamdani’s campaign centers on three bold policies:
- Freeze rents for over 2 million stabilized tenants
- Make buses free and faster
- Provide universal child care
To fund these changes, he proposes raising $10 billion through higher taxes on corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Specifically, he would match New Jersey’s 11.5% corporate tax rate and add a 2% tax on those earning more than $1 million a year.

🚌 Transit Equity
His key achievement: launching NYC’s first citywide pilot for free bus service, one route per borough. Ridership jumped up to 38%, driver assaults dropped, and low-income New Yorkers benefited most. He calls public transit a matter of equity, safety, and climate justice.
🚔 Redefining Public Safety
Mamdani argues for reallocating responsibilities rather than reducing police headcount. He proposes removing mental health crisis response from NYPD duties and transferring it to trained professionals. He also criticizes bloated overtime and PR budgets, noting that overstretched officers are leaving the force in large numbers due to burnout.

🚗 Business & Traffic Solutions
Mamdani supports congestion pricing but insists it must be paired with improved transit access. He also advocates cutting small business fees and permits by 50% to help mom-and-pop shops survive in an increasingly unaffordable city.
⚖️ Democratic Socialism, Explained
Citing MLK and Bernie Sanders, Mamdani says democratic socialism means guaranteeing the basics: housing, education, healthcare, and transportation, just like we already do with libraries and sanitation. For him, it’s not about labels but making dignity non-negotiable.

🗣️ Rising Through Grassroots Energy
Mamdani credits his rise in popularity to consistent messaging and a clear focus on working-class issues. What started as a 1% polling campaign grew into a mass volunteer movement powered largely by young, first-time voters. Even his own mother canvasses for him weekly. This is what grassroots feels like.
🛑 Calling Out Authoritarianism
He sees echoes of Trumpism in both parties’ failures. Mamdani criticizes elite Democrats, including Andrew Cuomo, for cozying up to real estate and corporate donors, arguing that their inaction helped fuel public disillusionment. He frames his campaign as a direct challenge to both right-wing authoritarianism and establishment complacency.

📢 It Resonates With NYC Voters
Mamdani says affordability is the defining crisis of New York City and the biggest reason longtime residents, especially Black and immigrant communities, are being pushed out. His message is that politics should focus on solving real problems rather than managing decline. “People want dignity and safety,” Mamdani says. “This campaign is about making that possible for everyone.”
