Scams targeting adults aged 60 and older are on the rise according to FBI data, with the average victim of elder fraud losing over $33,000. Beyond the financial toll, targets of scams can lose independence, and suffer reduced quality of life and poor health outcomes. Scams targeting Bay Area monolingual Chinese have had devastating consequences.
Every year a coalition of organizations including the SF Department of Disability and Aging Services’ Adult Protective Services unit, the SF DA’s Office, the SF Police Department and community providers hold trainings to arm older adults with the latest information on how to protect themselves.
Saturday, June 15, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an important time for ethnic media to help spread the word.
